A Brand Photography Session for Black Squid Photography

Brand photography is about capturing the essence of a person or business, and my session with Helen from Black Squid Photography was nothing short of magical. Helen and I have a history—our friendship dates back to a cupcake baking class in 2009 (although we didn’t become proper pals then). Over the years, we’ve worked together in the photography world, and it’s been incredible to see her journey from second shooter to carving out her niche as a pole and fitness photographer under her own brand.

This branding shoot in Edinburgh was packed with fun, creativity, and plenty of laughter—a day so enjoyable it didn’t feel like work at all.

The Journey of Black Squid

Helen’s story is one of growth, reinvention, and passion. After starting out second-shooting for me years ago, she honed her skills, found her style, and launched Black Squid Photography. While weddings weren’t her calling, she discovered her niche photographing pole dancers, fitness enthusiasts, and gym culture. Helen’s work is vibrant, bold, and full of personality—just like her.

A Shoot Filled with Colour and Character

Edinburgh provided the perfect backdrop for Helen’s brand session. Joining me was Kate Godfrey, another budding photographer at the time. As someone who loves teaching and mentoring, I couldn’t resist giving Kate a bit of shooting experience too. It’s always rewarding to see how these opportunities spark growth—I’m so proud of how Kate has gone on to become a brilliant wedding photographer.

The shoot was a mix of spontaneous discoveries and planned creativity, starting with a quick stop at a local bookshop. Its “Next Chapter” sign was just too perfect for Helen, reflecting the exciting stage she was in with her business.

Pockets of Light and Bursts of Yellow

We wandered Edinburgh looking for inspiration, which led us to a car park on Castle Terrace. The dramatic lighting there created these amazing pockets of shadow and bright highlights—ideal for some bold and playful shots. Helen loved it, and we had fun using the space creatively with its parking lines and urban vibes.

Next up was a bright yellow piano we stumbled upon. Helen’s love of optimism and cheerful colours drew us to it immediately. It was the perfect representation of her energy and positive outlook.

The Yellow Dress and Black Moon Botanica

The final stop was Black Moon Botanica, where Helen brought out her iconic yellow dress. This dress has become a part of her brand—it’s been photographed in countless places, almost like it has its own story to tell. The images we created here were more theatrical, with swirls and movements that captured the spiritual side of Helen’s personality. These shots were a stunning contrast to the urban vibes of earlier locations and added depth to her brand imagery.

Why Brand Photography Matters

Brand photography is more than just headshots—it’s about telling a story. For Helen, we captured both the vibrant, bold side of her and the thoughtful, spiritual essence of her work. If you’re looking to elevate your brand with photos that truly reflect who you are, let’s create something amazing together.
